Starting in September 2001 (Deadline of application: 31 July 2001)
The University of Malta is pleased to announce the holding of the
second Mediterranean Master's Course in Human Rights and
Democratisation.
This is a one-year postgraduate course which the University of Malta
coordinates on behalf of a network of seventeen universities and
human rights institutions. The programme receives the financial
support of the European Commission.
The course is open to graduates in law, social sciences, political
sciences, international relations, or humanities will at least a
second class honours and preferably with some experience in a field
related to human rights. An equivalent qualification from the
University of Malta or from another University (recognised by the
University of Malta) may also be accepted. A good command of
English, both written and spoken (minimum 550 TOEFL or equivalent) is
essential and a good working knowledge of French is highly desirable.
The course is spread over two semesters. The first semester starting
in mid-September is held in Malta and provides a structured overview
of human rights and democratisation issues through an
interdisciplinary approach. Each unit will be taught by leading
Maltese and international specialists.
Students spend the second semester (February to May) at one of the
partner institutions where, under the supervision of a local tutor,
they undertake research on a particular area of human rights and
produce a thesis of around 25,000 words. During this period students
will be expected to gain experience in human rights actions by
working for a local NGO.
In between the two semesters it is planned to organize a tour to the
major human rights organisations and institutes in Europe.
