Thanks to CivilSoc list member Mark Hammersley, I have just learned of a
very practical and well-designed online resource: Aid Workers Network. The
no-fee website, begun in 2002, is a source of "practical advice for aid
workers by aid workers" and can be found at www.aidworkers.net.
The mission of Aid Workers Network (AWN) is to "link relief and development
field staff to share support, ideas and best practice." It is an
"independent learning community" of development and relief practitioners to
provide mutual support and practical advice. AWN's ambition is "for
aidworkers.net to be a comprehensive 'one-stop-shop' for field workers
needing advice or resources to help with their current work. The web site
provides links to other online resources which have been recommended by
fellow field workers, as well as publishing original content where none
exists elsewhere."
The main activities are Aid Workers Forum, an online place to ask questions
and find answers, and Aid Workers Exchange, a weekly e-mail bulletin for
knowledge sharing. There is an archive at www.aidworkers.net/exchange and
you can subscribe online or email exchange at aidworkers.net with the word
"subscribe" in the subject line.
AWN currently has 2,758 members in 133 countries.
