EURASIA COUNTRY SPECIALISTS - AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL
Enjoy discussing international and human rights issues? Interested in
crafting strategies that can make an impact worldwide? Put your knowledge
and expertise to work in the promotion of human rights. Amnesty
International (AI) is seeking Country Specialists to monitor governments and
develop strategies to address human rights situations in the former Soviet
Union.
The position is voluntary with all related expenses reimbursed. The time
required is flexible and varies between 10 and 15 hours a week.
AIUSA Country Specialists are a collection of professionals that act as a
bridge between Amnesty membership, Amnesty professional staff, and the
public at large.
Work is conducted by email and phone with occasional face-to-face meetings,
assistance with local groups, conferences, and visiting human rights
defenders.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Respond to research requests from AIUSA or the Amnesty's research division,
the International Secretariat.
Monitor conflict situations, political developments; monitor gaps in AI
coverage.
Strategize and provide feedback on campaign strategies with particular
attention to cultural and political factors.
Advise and work with local groups on the day-to-day issues of working on a
campaign.
Monitor coherence in program & campaign material; adherence to Amnesty's
mandate.
Assist on the upcoming Amnesty Russia Country Campaign.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Relevant language ability
In-country experience
Background or interest in Russian studies, Russian language ability, or
in-country experience
Ability to prioritize and sift through a large amount of information
Willingness to "get your hands dirty"
Good writing or speaking skills
Knowledge of Amnesty International or willingness to learn about the
organization

Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan
Amnesty International is an independent, worldwide movement working for the
release of all prisoners of conscience (women, men and children imprisoned
for their beliefs, color, sex, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, language,
or religion, provided they have neither used nor advocated violence).
Amnesty International also works for fair and prompt trials for all
political prisoners and an end to torture, capital punishment,
disappearances and extrajudicial executions in all cases. Amnesty
International is funded through donations by its supporters and accepts no
government funding.
To avoid the perception of bias, Country Specialists, (also known as Country
Coordinators) are not permitted to work on countries of which they are
nationals. The positions are based in the USA with minimal travel. Country
Coordinators are asked to make at least a two-year commitment. The time
required of a Country Specialist will average approximately 12 hours a week.
All AI related expenses will be reimbursed.
