TITLE: Congressional & Public Relations Consultant
REPORTS TO: Director of Development
POSITION LOCATION: Washington, DC
ABOUT IREX: IREX is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to the
advancement of knowledge. Central to its mission is the empowering of
individuals and institutions to participate meaningfully in civil society.
IREX administers programs between the United States and Eastern Europe, the
New Independent States (NIS), Asia, and the Near East.
SUMMARY OF POSITION: IREX seeks a professional Congressional & Public
Relations Consultant to implement strategic outreach to the US Congress, the
Administration, and the media 2-3 days per week, on-site preferred. The
position will assist in the development and implementation of a concrete
plan of action.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
� Provide IREX with regular updates of: Congressional trends and priorities,
budgetary decisions and implications, hearings and briefings of interest,
changes to members' committee assignments or staff, etc.
� Request frequent informational meetings with Congressional members and
their staff, as well as members of the Administration.
� Draft a comprehensive communications strategy in coordination with IREX
staff.
� Invite members and their staff to IREX events including suggesting
invitees, drafting and delivering invitations, and securing Hill rooms for
events.
� Help coordinate targeted mailings of IREX promotional materials.
� Assist IREX in improving relations with the media, including drafting
op-eds.
� Provide a monthly report of consulting services performed.
� Perform other outreach tasks as appropriate and assigned by the Director
of Development.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must be extremely well organized, able to work independently,
skilled at handling multiple tasks, and able to adhere to deadlines. Other
specific qualifications should include at a minimum:
� Demonstrated connections to members of Congress and their staff, members
of the Administration and their staff, and the media.
� Knowledge of Congressional procedures, especially the budget cycle.
� Superior interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
� Familiarity with international issues, especially in Central and Eastern
Europe and the New Independent States, highly desirable.
� Knowledge of computers and relevant software (MS Office Suite, Excel,
PowerPoint).
