Research Centers and Resources

  • The Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA) is "an international, interdisciplinary membership organization. Our members include scholars and nonprofit leaders fostering the creation, application and dissemination of research on voluntary action, nonprofit organizations, philanthropy and civil society." The Arnova-L Discussion List is a listserv, not specific to the NIS, but rather "an international electronic forum for anyone using or interested in nonprofit organizations, voluntary action or philanthropy." The list is often used for posting queries related to ongoing research projects, and members are good at supplying good leads or answers to the queries.
  • The Beacon Project "connects people around the globe to find innovative solutions that help the leaders of community and nonprofit organizations better serve their clients."
  • The Center for Civil Society Studies of the Johns Hopkins Institute for Policy Studies "seeks to encourage the development and effective operation of nonprofit, philanthropic, or 'civil society' organizations. The Center carries out its work through a combination of research, training, and information-sharing both in the United States and throughout the world."
  • The Centre for the Study of Public Policy is a research department of the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow has developed a unique programme of cross-national cross-time surveys to monitor the transformation of post-Communist societies of Eastern Europe and the NIS
  • The European Foundation Center publishes a very good journal titled SEAL--Social Economy And Law, focusing primarily on Central and Eastern Europe and the Newly Independent States, with expanding coverage of European Union. The journal "seeks to promote an enabling environment for the social economy (foundations, associations, and other non-profit organizations) and to enhance the process of legal reform by improving the knowledge of current legal developments throughout Europe." The SEAL initiative is funded by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and the Open Society Institute-Budapest.  Both current and back issues are available online at http://www.efc.be/publications/sealabstract.html.
  • gpgNet, or The Global Network on Public Goods, is a new website created by Office of Development Studies in the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). It is intended to serve  "researchers, policymakers, business and civil society as a platform for information exchange and discussion, on issues concerning the theory, policy design and practice of providing global public goods."
  • The Institute of Commonwealth Studies at the University of London offers an interdisciplinary Masters Degree in "Understanding and Securing Human Rights." Institute of Commonwealth Studies, University of London, 28 Russell Square, London, WC1B 5DS", email: [email protected].
  • The Internet Nonprofit Center--Information for and about Nonprofits is a program of the Evergreen State Society, based in Seattle, Washington.   The center publishes the Nonprofit FAQ, "a resource of information provided by participants in many online discussions about nonprofits and their work. First-time users may want to look at the Guide to using the FAQ.
  • International Society for Third-Sector Research. A forum for researchers on civil society, philanthropy, nonprofits, and more, ISTR promotes research through a variety of disciplines and across national boundaries. It operates an active listserv for the community of scholars and others interested in the latest research on third sector issues. With membership in ISTR, one can also receive Voluntas, an excellent international quarterly journal of research about the nonprofit field. 
  • The NGO Café was set up by the Global Development Research Center "as a meeting place for NGOs to discuss, debate and disseminate information on their work, strategies and results. The basic objectives of the Café are to assist NGOs in enhancing and improving their programs and activities; to effect a better understanding of NGOs in general; and to enable NGOs to network at local, regional and international levels."
