The Open Society Institute has openings for two positions:
--International Relations Academic Leader
--Cultural Studies / Social Anthropology Academic Leader
The Academic Leader positions are based at the Central Asian Resource
Center (CARC) in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The Central Asian Resource Center is a
co-operative undertaking, supported by the Higher Education Support Program
of OSI, and the national Soros Foundations of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan,
Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Currently, two Academic Leaders in the
disciplines of Political Science and Sociology work at the Central Asian
Resource Center. The successful candidates for the Academic Leader
positions in International Relations and Cultural Studies / Social
Anthropology will begin their duties in the Spring 2003 academic semester.
Position Requirements:
· a Western university graduate-level degree, or considerable
Western academic experience
· a Ph. D. or equivalent
· knowledge of and experience with new teaching and curriculum
development methods
· university teaching experience
· experience facilitating training workshops
· an excellent command of English and Russian
Position Description:
The Academic Leader will be responsible for the development and
implementation of the strategic plan for their discipline area, as agreed
upon with the CARC Board of Directors. The Academic Leaders report directly
to the CARC Director, and will work in collaboration with the CARC Director,
the CARC Program Assistant, and the OSI Program Manager in Budapest. The
Academic Leader will also support the work of other Academic Leaders,
rotating certain duties as required.
Position Duties:
· Create, develop, and implement projects designed to support and
strengthen scholarly, teaching, and research capacity in the region
· Develop ideas for OSI funding and seek external funding (or
matching funding) as agreed with the CARC Board of Directors
· Seek and provide access to information on new disciplinary
content, books, and other information relevant to the discipline area
· Develop and maintain materials appropriate for new teaching and
curriculum methodologies
· Develop, organize, and / or teach disciplinary summer schools for
Central Asian faculty
· Develop and maintain a network of academic colleagues and
institutions in relevant places overseas in cooperation with the CARC
Director and other Academic Leaders
· Develop and deliver training workshops to Central Asian faculty in
new teaching and curriculum methodologies
· Develop and maintain a network of professional associates
throughout Central Asia, in cooperation with the CARC Director and other
Academic Leaders
· Develop and maintain a network of faculties and departments in the
relevant discipline throughout Central Asia and in cooperation with the CARC
Director and other Academic Leaders
· Develop and maintain contacts with colleagues in other relevant
international organizations in Central Asia an in cooperation with the CARC
Director and other Academic Leaders
· Provide information and support for research initiatives
· Develop and maintain core course readers in the relevant
disciplines
· Collect and disseminate relevant core curricula with the support
of the CARC Director and Administrative Assistant
· Provide the CARC Director with materials for activity reporting in
the relevant discipline area
