[A few CivilSoc list members have already submitted very useful responses to
the four-question survey below. Those of you who haven't--or who missed the
first request sent out Feb. 12--would you kindly look at the quick survey
below and send back your responses as soon as possible? HR]
This past November, CivilSoc had its eighth birthday. As we enter our ninth
year, I would like to ask four simple questions as to what subscribers look
for in CivilSoc, how it might improve, and what ideas you have for improving
our finances. I will be very grateful if you would return this e-mail with
your answers to moderator at civilsoc.org.
Your answers may be as short, or as long, as you want. You need not answer
all the questions. And you are encouraged to provide unsolicited comments,
too!
Thank you very much!!

QUESTIONS TO CIVILSOC MEMBERS
1. Are you satisfied with the volume of e-mail that comes from CivilSoc?
Too much, too little? (No answer to this question will be interpreted as
satsifaction.)
2. Are you satisfied with the mix of information that comes from CivilSoc?
Too many job announcements? Too few? Too little news of NGOs and their
work? Too much? Too little news and analysis on issues of civil society?
3. Some members have suggested that CivilSoc be split into two: one element
consisting of job announcements only, the other offering news and analysis
on civil society in the Eurasia and Eastern Europe region, etc. I am
resistant to this idea, for several reasons:
a. The subject line tells you when a message is about a job announcement.
Those not interested in this can simply delete the message without opening
it.
b. Splitting CivilSoc into two services would require considerably more
administrative time, and therefore only exacerbates the problem of of
moving CivilSoc from a subsidized service to one that pays for itself.
What is your opinion on the idea of splitting CivilSoc into two: a job
announcements only element, and an all-the-rest element?
4. Finally, can you suggest any ways by which to improve the financial
condition of CivilSoc?
a. Would you be willing to pay a subscription fee for CivilSoc? If so, how
much seems fair to you?
b. Should there be periodic (say, semi-annual) appeals for donations from
members?
c. Do you know of any foundation or corporation that might like to be a
sponsor of CivilSoc, in return for recognition of such sponsorship with each
e-mail message we send out?
4. Any other ideas?
