Assistant Project Director
The Center for Civil Society Studies at the Johns Hopkins Institute for
Policy Studies seeks an experienced senior researcher knowledgeable about
the nonprofit sector and civil society internationally to assist in managing
the Johns Hopkins Comparative Nonprofit Sector Project, an effort to
assemble, analyze, and disseminate basic empirical data on the size, scope,
financing, and role of nonprofit organizations throughout the world. The
successful candidate will serve as the principal collaborator of Project
Director Dr. Lester M. Salamon on all facets of this project.
Specific responsibilities include: working with national statistical offices
to promote their adoption of new procedures to depict the nonprofit sector
in national economic statistics; recruiting local research associates to
generate such data in countries where statistical offices are not yet
prepared to take up this task themselves; contributing to the revision and
updating of project research instruments where needed; providing technical
assistance to local statistical offices and local associates in implementing
the project's research design and the recently issued Handbook on Nonprofit
Institutions in the System of National Accounts; reviewing local work
products and monitoring the work of local research teams; assisting in
project fundraising and in liaison with an International Advisory Committee
to the project; preparing regular narrative reports for funders and others
on project progress; analyzing project results and drafting project reports
and publications.
The successful applicant will have the following qualifications: Ph.D. in
sociology, economics, political science, or related field, or M.A. in one of
these fields plus significant data and project management experience;
minimum of five years of research experience; record of high-quality
analytical writing; ability to work with macro-level data and knowledge of
economic data systems, e.g. employment statistics, economic censuses;
excellent interpersonal and oral/written communication skills; experience in
fundraising and managing multi-site projects; ability to balance multiple
priorities and to lead a team of colleagues; ability to travel
internationally.
