NOTE: Deadline for this essay competition is March 8!!
Dear All,
The International Debate Education Association (IDEA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) are holding an essay competition to select students to attend a youth conference in Italy and participate in a on-going project on youth and marketing. Below are the guidelines for the competition which were created by WHO.
This is clearly a great opportunity and we strongly encourage students to participate in this competition--note that the deadline is March 8 so there is not much time. Of course, this means a better ratio for those of you that do get the essay in!
We sincerely regret that this opportunity was not made available to more countries. Please feel free to e-mail either Nina Watkins ([email protected]) at IDEA or Garrett Mehl ([email protected]) at WHO if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Nina Watkins
Deputy Director
IDEA

World Health Organization Youth and Marketing essay competition guidelines:
Topic: "Should there be marketing restrictions on the tobacco, alcohol or fast food industry?"
Discuss with reference to any two of these industries (tobacco, alcohol, fast food) using your experience, supporting evidence and examples from your own country.
The essay should be 2000 words or less, and written in English.
The top three essayists will be selected by a panel of reviewers at the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva, Switzerland. The top essayist will be selected to participate in a WHO marketing project, and in an April 2002 workshop on marketing and young people to be held in Italy. To be considered in the competition, all applicants will need to be able to participate in the project and the workshop. Additionally, applicants will need to reside in Latvia, Russia, Hungry, or Kazakhstan, be between 18 and 24 years of age, and be conversant in English. Essays will not be returned to applicants, and once submitted, become the property of the World Health Organization.
Essay applications should be postmarked or preferably emailed by March 8th to BOTH:
