Dear Colleagues,
Attached, please find an update of the upcoming World Russian Forum. [from CivilSoc moderator: Attachment was removed as it was 60KB in size. Please go to http://www.civilsoc.org/ann-conf.htm to access the information contained in the attachment. ]
I want to thank all those who registered and to tell you that it looks like it will be a very exciting event. We received so many registrations that we had to move this conference to the larger auditoriums. Please note that on Monday, April 29 we will be at the Horizon Room (instead of Polaris) at the Ronald Reagan Center, 1300 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW and on Tuesday, April 30, at the Dirksen Senate Office Building, Room G-50 (instead of Hart 902).
Attention: those who did not send their registration fee yet... If you are seriously interested in attending, please do it as soon as possible since we are running out of space even in these larger rooms.
In the attached document you will see the schedule as it looks today. Some minor changes may occur. We are still waiting for a few confirmations from the US Administration which is understandable taking into account the current political situation. Congressional participation, however, looks better and better. We expect at least a dozen and probably more Members of Congress from both House and Senate.
Please note that we will have the welcoming reception on Sunday, April 28 at the Russia House, 1800 Connecticut Avenue, NW from 7 to 10 PM; Andrei Sakharov reception on Monday, April 29 starting with the sculpture dedication at the Russia House at 6:00 PM and followed by the banquet at the Russian Trade Mission across the Street at 2001 Connecticut Avenue, and Final Banquet at Maxim's restaurant on Tuesday, April 30 at 8:00 PM with Jack Gosnell - former US Counsel General in St. Petersburg during the Cold War and early Perestroika era. Jack will tell us the most amazing stories which happened during that time and which the public has never heard about. I can tell you that some of these stories are more exciting than those of James Bond and there will be also Russian band, dance, etc.
Well, we worked on this project for almost a year and are now approaching a finishing line. There are many interesting things happening in US - Russian relations and this Forum will help us to get a good perspective for the future development in this area.. The idea of US - Russian Alliance, no matter how crazy and impossible it may sound, is finding enough good people who at least are willing to hear what is it all about and contribute their thoughts and ideas.
It is also worth noting that on "popular demand" from New York folks who feel abandoned and are complaining that the whole event is taking place only in Washington, we added another session on Thursday, May 2 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Manhattan from 10 AM to 2 PM, followed by reception with Russian Counsel General Vyacheslav Pavlovsky. We invited Professor Stephen Cohen, formerly from Princeton and now with NYU who is one of the most knowledgeable experts on Russia and the author of many excellent books, to present his vision of US - Russian Alliance. Prof. Cohen will be joined by many American and Russian intellectuals and scholars who will actively participate in these discussions. This will be a really sophisticated event that you would not want to miss.
I am looking forward to welcoming you very soon at the Ronald Reagan Building on April 28 in Washington and perhaps in New York on May 2 as well. Please feel free to ask any additional questions but please do it by e-mail if possible. Our phones are jammed but I promise you an immediate response by e-mail.
