JOIN THE FIRST CLEAN UP THE WORLD CAMPAIGN IN UKRAINE !
Chysta Ukraina - Chysta Zemla (Clean Ukraine - Clean Earth) is the name =
of the Ukrainian national Clean Up the World campaign, that will be =
launched for the first time this year, September 21-23. Preparations to =
the campaign are currently co-ordinated by the Association of Ukrainian =
Cities, regional branch in Lviv.=20
Clean Up the World is an international community-based environmental =
awareness campaign, initiated in Australia in 1989 by a sailor and =
businessman Ian Kiernan. In 1993 it went global under auspices of the =
UNEP and currently is conducted in 130 countries, every September. =
During the campaign local communities, in partnership with local =
governments and business, organise clean ups, plant trees or otherwise =
take care of their immediate environment. More information is available =
at www.cleanuptheworld.org.
The co-ordinators in Ukraine draw on experience of Our Earth Foundation =
(Fundacja Nasza Ziemia) from Warsaw, a national CUW co-ordinator in =
Poland. The CUW campaign in Poland was started in 1994 by a Polish-born =
Australian, Mira Stanislawska-Meysztowicz, who also founded Our Earth =
Foundation. Clean Up Poland attracts every year two million participants =
and has markedly changed the way Poles see environmental issues. Many =
Polish towns became cleaner and healthier. In addition, the campaign put =
a pressure on local authorities to fulfil their obligations towards =
waste management and litter control, as well as on legislators to pass =
needed regulations. See www.naszaziemia.pl (English summary available).
As a part of the Clean Up the World Ukraine project, a study visit to =
Poland was conducted on May 7-10 for future organisers of Clean Up =
Ukraine - environmentalists and local authority officials. A major =
seminar in Zhovkva on May 25-26 consisted of a model local clean-up, a =
press conference, and a two-day workshop. The participants were 65 =
future Clean Up organisers (local government officials, =
environmentalists and teachers) from entire country, mainly Western =
Ukraine. The seminar in Zhovkva was followed by similar local events in =
Novomoskovsk (Dnipropetrovsk district), Kalush, and Nadvirna =
(Ivano-Frankivsk district). A major organisational and promotional =
seminar for Eastern districts of Ukraine is planned for August in =
Dnipropetrovsk. More media events will be organised in September.
The Lviv branch of AUC is now working on a guidebook for clean up =
organisers. It will be sent to all municipalities, environmental =
organisations, and many schools. A web site is also under construction =
(the address will be posted when available). The Clean Ukraine - Clean =
Earth campaign has good prospects. By now several dozen local =
governments and NGOs pledged participation and many more will join. =
Media are genuinely interested in covering it. Ukrainians have strong =
traditions of working together for the common good (e.g. toloka). Local =
authorities in Ukraine make efforts to activise citizens and to mobilise =
communities to care for the environment.
