PROGRAM INFO--Eldis Resource Centre on Pastoralism
I would like to announce a new initiative to those of you with an
interest in pastoralism. The Eldis team at the Institute of
Development Studies are starting up an electronic resource for
policy-makers, practitioners in the field, NGOs, Social Scientists
interested in pastoralism. I felt that as a group of people
reflecting on issues relating to Central Asia, the issue of
pastoralism might be one you would want to have your attention drawn
to. Much of our work focuses on pastoralism in Central Asia.
If you are interested to gain some idea of the kind of look and feel,
contents and structure of our proposed Pastoralism Resource Centre,
please check out <http://www.ids.ac.uk/eldis/rc/pastoralism.htm>.
N.B. This is a prototype resource.
Below is a description of the Eldis 'Pastoralism Resource Centre':
Eldis (the gateway to development information on the internet), is
collaborating with members of the Institute of Development Studies'
(Sussex) Environment Group, to produce a unique internet resource
('Resource Centre') focusing on pastoralism. Although we will aim to
inclusively incorporate material relating to pastoralism generally,
an important element in the Resource Centre will be a focus on
pastoralism and education; pastoralism and conflict.
What will this resource consist of? The resource will:
1. Feature important articles pitched at, (and emerging from),
policy-makers, grassroots NGOs, academics and researchers interested in
pastoralism
2. Incorporate news items relevant to a diverse audience interested in
pastoralism (i.e. conferences, new project initiatives etc)
3. Highlight specially commissioned resources. These resources will for
example:
* Focus on contemporary and on-going projects concerning pastoralists and
pastoralism
* Contain comprehensive bibliographies and reference lists, for electronic
and paper-based materials, concerning pastoralism
* Maintain large and comprehensive databases of researchers, organisations,
NGOs, academics working, or interested in, the arena of pastoralism
4. Allow organisations to contribute research work and relevant materials to
a website which has a high visibility
5. Offer the researchers/employees working within an organisation the
functionality to participate in a moderated discussion forum and
communicate with a large community of people involved in issues
pertaining to pastoralism
6. Offer the researchers/employees working within your organisation the
functionality to receive highlights on pastoralism via e-mail
7. Search through our database of pastoralism-related materials, (abstracts,
articles, organisations), using keywords
8. Incorporate a database of people/organisations interested in this area
We'd be delighted to obtain any feedback you might have on this initiative.
