Amedeo.com is a free-of-charge online medical literature guide.  Links at this site include FreeBooks4Doctors, Free Medical Journals, and Medicine on Earth, an international database of medical professionals.

American International Health Alliance(AIHA) web site is rich with informational resources. Of special interest for countries of the Eurasia region is the Eurasia Health Knowledge Network with its databases, forums, and  extensive Russian language section. There are also three mailing lists of importance:

1. EurasiaMedInfo is a moderated list that highlights information resources useful for health professionals working in the New Independent States (NIS) of the former Soviet Union and in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). It is also a resource for health professionals from other countries working collaboratively with these regions, or who are interested in international health issues. Health Resources Bulletins are periodically distributed on this list. Each Bulletin includes information about Internet resources on health and medicine. In addition, the bulletins contain general information about the Internet and how to effectively use Internet tools.  This bulletin is distributed in both English and Russian versions. The availability of selected full text documents which have been translated into languages of the NIS and CEE, and that can be accessed through the EurasiaHealth Knowledge Network Web site, will also be announced on EurasiaMedInfo.
2. EurasiaHealth is a general dissemination and discussion list related to issues of health care in the NIS/CEE.  It includes news about health issues in the region, announcements of upcoming EurasiaHealth chat events, and periodic updates about new resources available through the EurasiaHealth Knowledge Network Web site.
3. EurasiaTeleconsult is a mailing list for medical professionals to receive e-mail teleconsultation requests from health professionals in the NIS/CEE. For more information: http://www.eurasiahealth.org/english/mail/etelecon.cfm

Center for Communications, Health and the Environment. CECHE's programs in Hungary, the Czech Republic, former Yugoslavia, Romania, Bulgaria, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, and India "encompass conferences and other programs concerning policies, priorities, and infrastructure development for environment and health, some co-sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and attended by local Ministers and other policy-makers, as well as environmental and health scientists and educators from around the world."

Doctors of the World Since 1990, Doctors of the World-USA has provided medical and humanitarian assistance "to those in the greatest need in more than 20 nations--from the people of war-ravaged Kosovo to abandoned children in Russia to indigenous Indians in Chiapas to South Africans devastated by tuberculosis."

Environment and Health Online covers the environmental and health care sectors in central and eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. It is a publication of the Okno Group.

Heart to Heart, based in Oakland, California, provides free medical services, extensive training and education, and medical supplies to sponsored hospitals in St. Petersburg, Russia. Their mission is "to raise the level of medical care and improve the quality of life" for children and adults in St. Petersburg and the northwestern region of Russia. "Highly experienced medical professionals from local Bay Area hospitals travel to Russia and perform, educate, and train in the medical subspecialties of pediatric cardiology and pediatric and adult cardiology and cardiac surgery."

Infoshare International provides Russian individuals and organizations with the tools that they need to fight HIV/AIDS and STDs.

International Society for Infectious Diseases has as one of its programs, ProMED, a "global electronic reporting system for outbreaks of emerging infectious diseases and toxins, open to all sources." To get on the list of ProMED-mail, an e-mail-based system for reporting and monitoring "emerging diseases," visit the ProMED web site.

Magee Womancare International is a partnership between the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and a Moscow municipal hospital focusing on the care of women and infants.

Médecins Sans Frontières, also known as MSF or Doctors without Borders "delivers emergency aid to victims of armed conflict, epidemics, and natural and man-made disasters, and to others who lack health care due to social or geographical isolation." MSF was founded in 1971 by a small group of French doctors who believed "that all people have the right to medical care regardless of race,religion, creed or political affiliation, and that the needs of these people supersede respect for national borders. It was the first non-governmental organization to both provide emergency medical assistance and publicly bear witness to the plight of the populations they served."

PATH (Program for Appropriate Technology in Health) emphasizes improving the quality of reproductive health services and preventing and reducing the impact of widespread communicable diseases.

Planned Parenthood of Northern New England International Program has programs around the world focusing on work in reproductive health, comprehensive family life/sexuality education, and public policy.

Project Hope is dedicated to health education, health policy research and medical humanitarian assistance in the US and around the world.

Russia Desk Amsterdam has programs in the fields of public health and professional training and education. In 1998 launched project on birthgiving in the Russian Federation.

Russian Medical Fund provides medical equipment and supplies and medical education and training.

Russian State Central Scientific Medical Library is a US-Russian cooperative venture to provide access to on-line medical databases. In Russian only.

Ukrainian American Veterans Adopt a Hospital Program ships medical supplies and equipment donated from New Jersey and New York hospitals to medical schools and hospitals in Ukraine.

University of Iowa's Department of Family Medicine international programs include teaching opportunities, clinical and educational consultation, research initiatives, hosting of international colleagues, sponsorship of international family medicine conferences, and participation in international family medicine associations.

World Vision International is a Christian organization which provides medical and emergency aid, and fosters self-reliance worldwide. Has projects in the NIS.
