About CivilSoc

CivilSoc--Civil Society News and Resources for the NIS, is an Internet mailing list with more than 2,900 subscribers now in its ninth year of operation. The list is managed by Civil Society International and is offered at no charge for those interested in issues of democracy and development in the post-Communist societies of the former Soviet Union (FSU region) and Central and Eastern Europe (CEE region).

CivilSoc carries announcements about projects, new organizations, resources (print and electronic), job and grant opportunities, upcoming conferences and other events. Subscribers are encouraged to make their own postings, which can include queries directed to other list members, by sending them directly to: [email protected]. To view prior postings to CivilSoc, visit the CivilSoc Archives.

To Join or Leave the List

You can join or leave CivilSoc, or manage your account, from the following web page: http://lists.civilsoc.org/mailman/listinfo/civilsoc. When you join CivilSoc your e-mail address is designated  your administrative or "admin address" and you will be asked to choose a password.  You will need both to access your account and make changes in its options, such as choosing to receive a day's postings in digest form, instead of as a series of individual e-mails. As a reminder, the CivilSoc listserver will mail you your password on the first day of every month.

Posting Announcements to the List

Announcements for CivilSoc can be posted directly to [email protected]. All postings are subject to approval and editing by the list moderator. There is no charge for any postings, except job announcements, for which Civil Society International charges nominal fees. (See schedule below.) There is no charge for postings of internship or volunteer opportunities. Job announcements by indigenous nonprofits based in the FSU or CEE region also carry no charge.

Before submitting a posting to CivilSoc, please first review the Guidelines below and then send your message to [email protected]. When you send a job announcement to CivilSoc, Civil Society International will assume that you want it also to appear on the Jobs: Current Openings page of the Civil Society International website (www.civilsoc.org/ann-job.htm). Fees for this service can be found in the left-hand column above. If you want your post to go only to CivilSoc, or only to the CSI Jobs web site,  please indicate this in a separate e-mail to [email protected].

Guidelines for Postings
  • Concise messages. Please keep messages no longer than 750 words, or about 5-7 kilobytes in size. If you submit longer material, we will probably shorten it. Putting a link in your message to a website with a longer version of your announcement is one way to keep your messages brief.
  • No attachments. Attachments can carry viruses; tend to be big; and sometimes require software that not all list members have.
  • No fancy formatting, HTML, unusual fonts, bolding, etc. Please send your message as a simple text file without special formatting. (If you use Outlook Express, for example, there is a category "Format" on the toolbar. Click on that and you will be given a choice between "Plain Text" and "Rich Text (HTML)." Click on Plain Text. Plain text messages have no fancy formatting, no variety of fonts, no bolding, italicizing or underlining. They make for the smallest files, and cause the least problems on the receivers' end.)
  • Descriptive subject line. Use the Subject line of your posting to describe its contents in terms that are as brief and descriptive as possible. This makes it more likely that your message will be read by those you want to reach; it also saves list members with no interest in the subject the time required to open and read the e-mail. Often, just five or six well-chosen words can communicate a great deal.
  • Send ready-to-post announcements.  Please do not preface your messages with asides to the Moderator, such as, "Please post immediately," or, "Here is our billing information." Messages sent to [email protected] should carry only content for members of the CivilSoc list and be ready-to-post. Use [email protected] or [email protected] to communicate with Civil Society International about administrative matters or ask questions.
